Sending love to you and for more of those corners of joy you always manage to find, strength when you flag, and a glad reunion in Sauve.

Hooray for going south to be with your family! I am so glad you had that wonderful day swimming recently, and visit to Montmartre. I am reading The Ambassador’s Wife and it feels like you are winking or waving to me with every Seattle reference— the Mariners! Cornish College!

Thank you for everything you’ve shared and continue to share with us, and for the clarity, and honesty.

May you be able relax and bask and feel lifted up by the love of your family and friends.🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹♥️

Thank you, as always, for your wonderful (heartbreaking) column. I was diagnosed with advanced kidney cancer (a total surprise at 41) just as your Modern Love piece came out and your work has been such a solace these last months. With Christmas wishes from Ethiopia, just across the sea from your old home.

Dearest Dana, I am touched by your message, and so sad to hear your own news. I’ve only been to Ethiopia once, but I loved it so much. The colors, the fruit, the people, the red dirt, the green mountains around Addis Ababa. I accompanied a doctor to a colony of AIDS patients there, to bring them supplies. I hope that the doctors and your body can free you from the dreadful cancer. Thinking of you. xo

I’m so happy for you that you’re going home to have Christmas with your family. May it be a blessed one. Here in Abu Dhabi, a person meets a royal person, a Shaikh or Shaikha—and you are a shaikha or queen of the heart—with “Allah yatawwal omrik.” May God lengthen your life. May it be so, inshallah. 🙏🤲Have a happy family Christmas.🎄🌹

Shukhran! :-) I appreciate your words. I remember Abu Dhabi fondly. I was once an invited speaker at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, and had so much fun there! How are you spending your days?

Thank you for your kind words. I’m so sorry I missed meeting you when you came to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. You might remember I was a friend of Holly Warah and was in her writers group. Have a wonderful family reunion and a successful treatment inshallah. 🙏🤲

Your situation is devastating, but I am so happy for this Christmas miracle. You are a gift, your writing is a gift, and I want you to know that while I hate what you're going through, your Substack, when I can read it, allows me to process my own feelings about severe and possibly terminal illness. May you be flooded with peace this holiday.

Jennifer, I'm so sorry that you're going through this. Your writing as always is clear and focused on what's necessary (always what I am aiming for with my own writing!), and I feel reading it how elemental this mode of expression is to you. I am sending you love and care from afar, and am so glad you had this Christmas miracle. Love, Allison

Best wishes to you, Tim and Theo. We know you all will make Christmas as merry as it can be. As I write this, I imagine you have been together for the eve, and I realize Christmas itself is about an hour away in France. Get a good night's sleep and have a wonderful day tomorrow.
