I love that you read Richard Greenberg's play ... he was a dear childhood friend who left us too soon. You would like his play, Three Days of Rain, which has more of a female sensibility.

I have been meaning to read that play! I will see if I can get ahold of a copy. How wonderful that he was a childhood friend of yours! And I am very sorry he died so young. I am sending so much love to you Amy!

I love that the movies are once again the saving grace they always have been. Andrew, my Canadian, loves to read books on people being cold and miserable, Arctic voyages etc--he just read Barry Lopez's Arctic Dreams and could not stop talking about it, he loved it so much. Maybe it will put you in touch with your wintery Northern self. I'm sorry you can't take the Italian doctor up on the travel recommendation, except the local version. My, to swim in the Seine or the Canal St. Martin! Sending love.

Hope you're finding a way to escape the heat. Thinking of you.

I love the Italian doctor! Vacation in any way you can. Your mind is a beautiful place and your imagination full of delights you have yet to tap.

Sending love and slow breathing and hopefully a gentle breeze your way.

The Columbus Café at the corner of Rue de Rivoli and Bd. Sébastopol is nicely air-conditioned. There've been AAWE get-togethers there. Its very pleasant upstairs. It's a short walk from Châtelet, exits 11 or 13, which are also the closest exits from line 14.

Movies are full in heat waves. My daughter, who lives near the Saint Émilion and Grande Bibliothèque cinemas plans to spend the week going to the movies and doesn't care much about what's on. She has the unlimited subscription card. I've become a hermit, sticking to my room in air conditioning, except for a short walk in the early morning. Tomorrow, the hottest day and at the hottest time, we've got our tickets for the Matisse exhibit. I'm crossing my fingers that line 1 will be reasonably cooled.

Thank you for the suggestion, Ellen! I hope you are staying cool. Let me know if the Matiss exhibit is air-conditioned! I'm going tomorrow and am nervous! Glad you have a room with AC. That's amazing. Stay cool!

I also hated Oh Mary. I could hardly stand to sit through it. My neighbor John Cameron Mitchell who lives in New Orleans invited us to come see it when he was starring in March and I was so horrified I couldn’t even go back stage as we had planned. Nothing redeeming about it. It was like a bad high school skit.

Yes! That was just my reaction. I just don't even get why it exists.

I'm with you about the heat. My body has always fought it, despite living in the mid-Atlantic for the better part of my life. I think it is my Scandinavian blood!

The word schistocytes sounds almost Yiddish, doesn’t it? What a relief (albeit a tiny one) to know what befell your kidneys and that you can return to chemo. Dr L sounds ace. I am with you on heat and commiserate fully. I wish I could send you air conditioners for your flat. Sending love instead xx

Hi Jennifer. Oh I remember when Paris in early June anyway was still cold. Now look what we’ve done. Swimming helps here in New Orleans. When we get out of the pool at the 19th Century New Orleans Athletic Club (Tennessee Williams swam there) it’s like we are cool from the inside out. So I hope you do get to swim. We saw Oh Mary because our neighbor John Cameron Mitchell did a guest shot in the lead. We like him a lot but we felt the same way you did. The only great part was when JCM did a cabaret number at the end. Love to you!

I have swum at the New Orleans Athletic Club! I used to go there to swim when I was in town for Words & Music. I even once accidentally joined a water aerobics class there.... Glad you are getting to the pool. Love from Paris! Jennifer

Sending love and crushed ice!!! Blocks of ice the old-fashioned way, off the back of a wagon and carried with pincers.
